ItN Nanovation announces new Cer@Sorp process for improved radium
removal from contaminated drinking water

---------------------------------------------------------------------
- The new chemical Cer@Sorp process removes up to 98% of radium from
drinking water in combination with ItN's ceramic flat sheets
- Conventional techniques reach a removal rate of 80% max, requiring high
doses of chemicals with corresponding operating costs
- Cer@Sorp gives ItN a decisive competitive advantage, leading
to new technical applications previously not viable
Saarbruecken, 10 June 2014. ItN Nanovation AG (ISIN: DE000A0JL461) has
developed and successfully tested a new, improved process for removing
radium from contaminated drinking water. This new technology called
Cer@Sorp significantly surpasses conventional techniques, providing ItN
with a decisive competitive advantage. Groundwater and deep-well
water contaminated with radium is mainly a problem in Middle-east
countries, where water is a scarce and precious resource.
The new development is based on the conventional solution for sand filters
and polymer membranes. In addition, it uses the possibilities and process
advantages of ItN's flat sheet membranes. Thanks to the combination of
chemical pre-treatment and targeted cake-layer filtration, which is only
possible with ItN's ceramic flat sheet membranes, the radium removal rates
were successfully raised to up to 98%. These are results previously only
achieved by very expensive filtration processes with reverse osmosis.
Sand filters and polymer membranes do not allow a targeted growth of cake
layer during filtration. In the previously applied conventional process
chemicals had to be dosed via inefficient dosing systems, making high
demands on the construction side and requiring high overdosing of chemicals
in order to achieve radium removal rates of 80%.
The new combination of chemical process and ceramic flat membranes does not
only offer cost advantages to the operators of waterworks with regard to
construction and operation of the plant, it increases water quality to such
an extent that may make costly and complex post-treatment - such as reverse
osmosis - redundant. Cer@Sorp enables the use of wells, whose water quality
until now did not permit their use as sources of drinking water.
For ItN Nanovation AG this new development is a further important step
ahead in further increasing the performance of its core product, the
ceramic flat sheet membrane.
